The train from Kandy towards Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable journeys, but the best experience comes from treating it as part of the trip rather than a box to tick. The route takes you through changing scenery: busy suburbs give way to waterfalls, tea fields and cool mountain air.

Reserved seats are the easiest choice for a relaxed day, especially in peak season. Second class offers more movement and a livelier atmosphere; if you want the classic open-door photographs, wait for a safe, quiet moment and keep both feet inside the carriage. Views change sides throughout the route, so there is no single perfect seat.

Break the journey if you can. Nanu Oya is useful for Nuwara Eliya, while Haputale and Ella make good bases for short walks and viewpoints. Check the current timetable locally, arrive early and keep snacks and water close for the slow, scenic sections.
